Yes, and you're completely missing the point.
It's a quick, easy fix to solve a BIG problem. Viruses are always a big problem.
And whatever anyone thinks of people that don't have their own virus protection or
even understand it, it's not an unreasonable way to handle it.
Your statement that a DOC file could be any number of things isn't particularly
relevant. The number of files with a .DOC extension that ARE Word documents enormously
outweigh any others. That's reality. Lotus WordPro is as good as dead. WordPerfect
isn't far off. And there are other file extensions that are often used for those
anyway.
But it really doesn't matter - to have the IRC server scanning the files to see if
they're Word documents would be silly and pointless.
Blocking them, in a way that you can easily switch off, seems a perfectly reasonable
thing to do.
