Right. It sounds like you don't have the auth service enabled in Genesis.
Rather than messing around with Inetd, there is an option in AmIRC to make
it process ident requests itself.
Check the box on the server selection window that says "Use IdentD?".
If its ghosted, then something worse is wrong ;) In which case try disabling
the auth service in Genesis, and use AmIRC's built in support.
If you still get a ~ after all that, i'll bet you are using a proxy.
The reason that some channels (and networks!) ban clients without ident, is
that sock proxies and similar can't provide ident. Insecure socks
proxies are often abused to flood channels and users, so most network will
have some method of banning them. Some use a check on port 1080 (legally
dubious) and some just ban all clients without ident.
This shouldn't be a problem unless you have no choice but to use a (secure)
socks proxy. In which case, you could try and get access to a bouncer, which
should have ident.
