This feature has been requested many times, and rejected an equal many times, for various reasons. The server knows. It's entirely possible to do it. Some clients actually do it. But... Yes, it's rather ugly, and no, it's not getting in :-) The gain (if any at all) of seeing someone (un)away every x minutes doesn't even begin to warrant the (only) horribly inefficient way of implementing this feature.
