Because I've been looking for a decent Ranger for a while I'll chime in.....

I can't disagree with people that say they are overpriced at $500. Just
because someone spends that much restoring it doesn't make it worth that -
it's generally not true with old cars, or houses, or anything else. People
pay $200 - 300 for a great repaint because its worth it to them.

But there are a limited number of people willing to pay the price for a
limited number of beautiful rigs. And it will be that way as long as there
are old radios. The only unfortunate thing about this is that it drives up
the expectations on what, five years ago, would have been 50$ hamfest Rangers
(I should have kept a couple). $300 Rangers that need work, have poor paint,
and are missing knobs are overpriced too. I've seen alot more of those, and
their owners have done nothing to enhance the value of the rig other than
drag these poor orphans out of a garage or a basement (which still helps the
rest of us a bit). They're just hoping someone will pay that because a nice
one brings more. That unfortunately will remain a fact of life. But alot of
us will walk by those....

None of this stops anyone from enjoying AM. I've been running a $20 Viking 1
for the last three seasons (OK, I had to pay 50$ for a VFO and it took a
while to find one at that price). I keep looking for my reasonable Ranger.
But it won't sound or work any better, just look a little better and take up
less space. Just find something that you like and fix it, or bide your time,
I guess, all things come to those who wait :) If you have to have a $500
Ranger, you have to $500. but it doesn't keep anybody from having a ball on
10 when its open.
