You know, there are IC's that you can build a complete receiver around. A couple of caps, a tuning condensor and digital frequency readout... A PLL chip with a 555 timer and a variable cap could be a good VFO, with a momentary contact push-button for spotting.. Solid State devices like the 2SC2879 would work as well, in the final.
