Here in the Northeast, people join a roundtable QSO and then tune up when it's turned over to them. It's "fun" listening to dead air while they meticulously dip the dipper and peak the peaker countless times. Gives the other members time to take a break, grab a beer, go to the bathroom, or have dinner.
