Why, I have a modem connection at home :) I can assure you that aMSN has no connection problems on me, even when I am downloading something (like 1KB/sec left for aMSN!) So maybe the problem is not on the slow connection itself. I am currently getting the cvs snapshot, so my line is so jammed that even ssh is slow like hell, but I got connected in less than one minute!
