Does anyone have any techniques or programs or perl scripts or whatever
that parses either the web server log or analog's output to forecast traffic?
I have made a few attempts at this. One looked at per-hour requests for 2
weeks then calculated an expected traffic volume for the day based on
figures as of 9 or 10am. This sort of works but is not very accurate until
3-4pm.
I'm just now starting to write a perl program that calculates a linear
trend on daily totals for the past X number of weeks and forecasts traffic
for the next day. Each weekday being kept seperate -- ie: linear trend for
Mondays. This at least would allow me to forecast 1 week (possibly more) in
advance. Since I can get data by parsing analog reports this is
self-maintaining.
But there must be a better way. I'm not very good with stats. Any insight
or help appreciated in advance!
