Hmmm... Doesn't the second term of the Logfile prepend that to all request. So
that your direxclude should be like this?
    DIREXCLUDE http://www.mydomain.com/*/images/*

On the otherhand, we've used
    FILEEXCLUDE /images/*
to do this and that seems to work just fine.
