Right. EXCLUDEs are done after ALIASes. But you can easily get round it:
  HOSTALIAS client1.mydomain.com junk
  HOSTALIAS client2.mydomain.com junk
  HOSTALIAS *.mydomain.com mydomain.com
  HOSTEXCLUDE junk
