This isn't quite true in Linux environments. Most of the time you don't need
to compile anything because a version already exists for your distribution.
This is especially true if you're using Debian, and true to a large extent
if you're using RedHat.

Yes, the binaries are (just about) compatible between different Linux
distributions. However, the package is more than the binary. It also
installs configuration files etc. -- and different distributions don't
necessarily put these in exactly the same place.

I don't know off hand whether Slackware is compatible with RedHat or
Linux PPC or Debian in this respect. However, you may find tools to convert
the RedHat .rpm to your own distribution. On my Debian box, there is a tool
called alien to do this. On the other hand, with analog, it may be simpler
to compile it yourself...
