The previous answer had everything you really need to know, but didn't
answer part of the question...

> What does the # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE - edit the master and reinstall. mean?

Linux may be different, but on every other unix I've used...

Cron doesn't continually scan text files every minute, it creates a
database and uses that. (if you have 1000 users each with their own
crontab the reason for that is obvious) This warning simply means that you
can't edit the file "directly" and expect cron to know about the changes
you just made.

As far as using daily, etc. that's personal choice. It won't make
much/any different in most situations. If you're the only user on a box,
or only root has cron privs, it makes sense to use daily and the like so
you don't have duplication/conflict trouble.

One thing that also bears mentioning- Analog is not written to save
foolish mortals from doing silly things. If you allow non-root to modify
the input, output, or configuration files you should *NOT* run it as root.
With creative INCLUDE, HEADER, etc. directives or a few choice symlinks
it's easy to suck in or wipe out the encrypted passwords or any other
sensitive file. Note: this is not really a fault in Analog, it's just a
fact of life.
