There is indeed system-wide config /etc/analog.cfg with line

UNCOMPRESS *.gz,*.Z "gzip -cd"

After changing that to /bin/gzip, it started to work. Thanks for your
help. 

But I would expect my local config overwrites system-wide config - isn't
this compress problem something like a bug?
