Your advice , as always, is excellent!

After using the --settings command I got :

  Directory Report [ON]
    Columns: number #pages
Sorting by number of requests for pages
Floor is: 1 request for a page
Sorting sub-items by number of requests for pages
Floor for sub-items is: 1 request for a page
Plotting pie chart by number of requests for pages
Including (+) and excluding (-) the following in the report:
      All excluded, then
      + pages

The last part puzzled me but then I found a DIRINCLUDE pages command -
which when commented out caused the problem to go away.

How can this have fixed it? doesn't seem to make sense.....

regards
Andy

I agree this seems strange. I assume you don't have any DIREXCLUDEs?

Try running with --settings to check that you haven't got some other
options
overriding the ones you think you have set. If that doesn't explain it, try
reducing it to the minimal misbehaving logfile.
