I've always had to specify my DNS server (/Y xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) to get QDNS
to work. It's one of a number of drawbacks I find with it (though I still
use it).

You could write to the author of QDNS (not Stephen Turner) and let him
know - he might fix it in the next version.
