Yes, PLAIN: only works on the right hand side of an alias. On the left hand
side you can use regular expressions. Try
  FILEEXCLUDE REGEXP:\*
(Actually, that will exclude anything with a star in it. To exclude
filenames which are only "*" use
  FILEEXCLUDE REGEXP:^\*$
-- the ^ and $ are beginning-of-string and end-of-string markers).
