Hi Aengus
I don't wish to waste yours or anybodies time, I used the facility
available from you to gain some assistance with a problem with a matter
which I have very limited knowledge, yes I read the basics of the
documentation hence I was able to configure and use the software to
analyze my log file until someone throws me a curved ball.
I originally asked you and the team a question and didn't expect you to
do my work for me, you could have just said its not a correct Combined
Format, I could see from my own observations where the problem lay, but
with limited knowledge I am/was unable to determine whether the extra
character was deliberate or a scripting error or some such occurrence.
It may well have / could still be a legitimate new format which needed
to be handled with the correct FORMAT, again I would be the last to
know, so I have asked both you and the ISP.
Their technical support advised Combined Format and I could get little
other information, a matter I am still dealing with.
I turned to you as the experts being the creator of the software for
some help having made some attempts with limited abilities to work out
an answer and can honestly say that in hindsight did find a work round
but failed to notice it, taking the report as a further statement of
failure and got further away from the point, as i explained in the last
post I made. Jeremy finally made the point in his response which I am
grateful for, this could have been the way the question could have been
answered in earlier replies, that is the point I am trying to make.
I am equally a busy person but like you give my support to those who
ask for it in my given field of experience, but I never assume that
those who ask do so for any reason other than they need it. perhaps in
that way I am the fool, but I get satisfaction from contributing to
someone elses education as I was helped along the way in the past, I
like to put something back.
I suspect that you do what you do for similar reasons, as do the likes
of Jeremy and others in the loop, please consider that some of us do
need help for good reasons and temper your replies to request for that
help with some consideration for the fact that we may not be as worldly
wise in such matters as you are. As such, in my case I didn't come to
you first, I tried to reason through the matter and failed! I probably
won't next time, I just hope there isn't a need to ask again.
Politely I will step back from the fray and get on with managing what I
suspect are still corrupt files, with the amended LOGFORMAT you have
helped me acquire and for which am extremely grateful!
Best regards
David

Hi Aengus
No need to be rude,
David, asking other people to do your work for you is rude. Reading the
documentation doesn't seem like too much to ask before you ask for
help.
I am grateful for your support, I have learned a lot from the
exercise and perhaps before I go I can pass on one of the lessons we
both should learn, that this could have save both you and I time, if
you had simply sent or posted the COMBINED LOGFORMAT with the added
%j in the correct place. It would have saved me time and more
importantly you your own time spent replying.
David, I posted a link to the webpage where COMBINED is explained, and
told
you what you needed to do to fix your problem, in my very first reply.
Yes,
if I'd known that you weren't going to bother reading the
documentation, I
could have saved some time by just posting a LOGFORMAT, but I assumed
that
you already had a custom LOGFORMAT to deal with the broken Referrer
Report,
and that if you didn't, you'd actually be interested in understanding
what
the problem was, so that you could fix it (and the problem with the
Referrer
Report). Saving your time isn't at the top of my list of priorities,
having
people who have actually read the documentation and can help answer
questions on the list is more important to me (and will theoretically
save
me time in the long run).
The LOGFORMAT command is the thing that makes Analog so incredibly
flexible.
It is trivially easy to modify, and is well documented. You could have
saved
yourself (and others) a great deal of time and frustration by learning
how
the LOGFORMAT command works.
