Jeremy,
I did use OUTPUT COMPUTER, etc, and got the cryptic output. I also
tried reading the current report html files into an excel spreadsheet,
and it didn't look like what the client is asking for. I'm actually
on vacation today, and will look at this in more detail tomorrow.
I've done enough work today :-)
In closing, the client is looking for something like this SFX query
txt output file:
Journal Requests
Total: 504
0305-750X World development 14
0360-0025 Sex roles 14
0306-4603 Addictive behaviors 13
0953-5314 Economic systems research 11
1077-8012 Violence against women 11
0079-2939 Polish Psychological Bulletin 10
0272-2631 Studies in second language acquisition 10
0010-0285 Cognitive psychology 9
Jeanne
PS I'm rereading the analog help to see if I can explain it to the
client, if I ever get it right.

COMPSEP ,
If you want to send output to a comma-separated-value format for further
analysis in Excel. However, the COMPUTER output format is meant to be read by a
machine and is slight cryptic:

If you have a relatively recent version of Excel you can open HTML files in it,
which is probably your best bet. Just use the normal HTML output and then open
from the File menu in Excel. It will convert all the tables to cells in the
spreadsheet and will preserve the formatting and charts (although the charts
will just be images -- not Excel charts, of course).

Thanks for responding so quickly, as I took another look at the error
messages and analog couldn't find my cfg file. When we moved from
linux to sun, the file locations changed. I have the cache files for
the past few years. I ran a directory report. I'll get back to you -
I'm having problems reading the output into excel, which is what the
client wants. I may need help with that. I want to run a few more
test with the data.

Can the cache files be used for text delimited reports ?
If you can generate the output with ordinary log files, you can generate
it with cache files.
I'm not
getting any results. I may have my statements incorrect. Do you have
any examples ?
There isn't a "how-to" document for cache files. As with any aspect of
Analog, it's always a good idea to start simple, with a small logfile.
A very simple example is to create a cache file from the sample logfile
that comes with Analog:
First, create the cace file:
analog logfile.log +C"cacheoutfile cache1"
(this also creates the default Report.html).
Then run Analog against the cache file:
analog +C"cachefile cache1" +Ocache.html
If you look at cache.html (created from a cache file) and Report.html
(created from logfile.log), you'll see that they are basically the same
report, even though th cache file is less than one third the size of the
logfile.
