I don't know why you'd be scared to have your friends find out you do
dev work on Windows. Windows has been a fairly good and stable
operating system for a long time (Think Windows NT). I use XP 64-bit
and it's great. I use linux too, but I don't find one to be better
than the other.

As for linux disto, I've seen more than one complaint in the groups
about Ubuntu not working right. I have a fedora 8 box and it works
fine.

What java version might be interesting... On my windows box, I have
few different jvms installed (various versions of sun and bea). If I
try to set any of them in my path, Eclipse will crash when starting
up. Very odd problem, but I don't know if that's the issue for you.
Another thing is you mention java-ee-sdk. I'm guessing that's in
reference to the enterprise version, which you don't need for this. I
doubt it would matter much though.

For installation steps, I'll go with what I did on my linux box. It
was a fresh install of Fedora 8. I selected to install Eclipse
(although you should be able to use yum to install it afterwards). As
I recall, I downloaded a j2se sdk and ran the installer. I think I had
to manually set the path, but I don't recall. I know I set the path to
the android sdk. After that, I just started eclipse and set the
android sdk path there and I was done.
