I bought a Dev phone, had it shipped to my parents' place in Virginia,
and then brought it back to Germany with me. However, I can't get it
to pick up a GSM signal in Germany, and can't get past the
initialization wizard. Based on the fact that I cannot get it to
reboot from the keyboard by typing "<ENTER>reboot<ENTER>", I assume
that the phone is RC30 or later. So, I assume I can't use any sneaky
tricks to get past the initialization wizard. Here's what I have
tried:

I uncrated the phone in Virginia, and plugged in my "T-Mobile D" pre-
paid SIM card from another phone, just so it had some sort of SIM card
to work with. It got a signal in Virginia, but couldn't initialize
after I had plugged in my username and password. The menu options
allowed me to select several different providers, and toggle roaming
features, but still no luck. I figured it was a long shot anyway. I
crated the phone back up, and brought it back to Germany with me
yesterday.

In Germany, I plugged my "T-Mobile D" pre-paid SIM card back into the
phone, but this time the signal meter showed no signal. The menu
allows me to edit and add APNs, but does not allow me to choose from
any providers or toggle roaming like it did before. I tried removing
all pre-configured US-based APNs and rebooting, but no luck. I tried
adding a T-Mobile D1 APN using information from
http://www.quickim.com/support/gprs-settings.html#Germany but no
luck. I tried a friend's SIM on a T-Mobile D contract that was
provisioned for data services, and another friend's SIM on Vodaphone,
but no luck. Each time, I had no signal shown on the meter in the
upper-right corner, and the initialization wizard fails after entering
the username and password with the error "There is a problem
communicating with the Google servers. This could be a temporary
problem or your SIM card may not be provisioned for data services. If
it continues, call Customer Care."

Several possibilities for the problem come to mind. Perhaps the
phone's Euro-frequency electronics or antenna are defective. Perhaps
the phone got locked onto US frequencies while I was in Virginia, and
now refuses to try Euro frequencies. Since the phone is still stuck
in the initialization wizard (which is a very unfortunate design
defect, but that's another story), I don't know what else I can do to
debug or test. Any ideas, or should I just call Brightstar?

Thanks,
Dave
