To further the points in this thread: the trick is to keep reading and keep educating yourself. You can program for years on end and still keep learning things.
As far as the "point me to the one true resource," I am afraid to say that you'll never find it. Not for Android, Java, PHP or Fortran. You will find that your knowledge comes from a variety of sources. Documentation sites are great for looking things up, but are terrible for learning the basics. Tutorials tend to be too focused on the task at hand, rather than the big picture (ok, so I made the pretty app in the book...how do I use this now?). Finally: you need to learn Java before you dive in to Android. Android development is *in* Java, so you need to have a base understanding of the underlying principles. It'd be like trying join a swim team but never bothered learning how to swim. Sure you could learn as you go but it's going to make things a lot more difficult than they could be. -Chad On Feb 23, 2009 7:58 PM, "gymshoe" <[email protected]> wrote: I also think it is a challenge to step into something as complex as picking up java and android as a newbie. However, unfortunately that's just the way it is... I think your options are: 1) give up 2) Pay to go to a formal (expensive) computer programming course where they will give you more "spoon-feeding" 3) Keep reading. Be patient. Be persistent. As you assimilate information it will get easier. If you have a specific question which you are having trouble getting your head around, post a specific question on the forum and appreciate anybody who will take the time to reply. I also used the book Faber mentions. (It was the only one available when I started.) That book can help to get you going, but don't expect it to be a panacea. At times it too may seem over a newbie's head (IMHO). Just keep going, and slowly keep learning. It gets easier and easier. best of luck.
