IMO the question more to the point is what license you want to release your software. If you release closed source unless you encrypt or thoroughly obfuscate your code will likely be accessible to others anyway.
Applying the proper license assigns rights to your Users and anyone else with access to your code, take a look at the various GPL and the MIT license for starters if you're considering typical Open Source. If you're considering Closed Source, then take your pick of your favorite app or dig up a typical MS license. Yes, you need to understand the business model you intend to use if you want to make money and then pick the appropriate license to support that business model. Less technically capable users would probably end up purchasing the app from the market since they don't possess the know-how to install it from source. You can also be a little sneaky in making the location of the source hard to find, or giving it out more selectively, but then that's not really in the spirit of open source On Wed, Jul 1, 2009 at 5:13 PM, twistadias <[email protected]> wrote: Me and a few of my mates from uni want to start on building and selling some android apps. The problem is one of us is really keen to make the whole thing open source. If we do go ahead and make it open, wont anyone be able to download the source and run it on their phone instead of purchasing it from the app store? Im kinda in a dilemma as to which path to take. Any help would be appreciated. -- Andrew Burgess --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Beginners" group.
