This is my theory. One of the creators of Android company, which android is based on, came from an company called Danger in mountain view.
Danger made the sidekick - The applications made on the sidekick are all done in java. http://developer.danger.com/site/faq/show#q5 An natural evolution of the client side language for android based on the founders experience would be java.
