To my knowledge, Java is simply faster. That, and Python is also rather "big".
With any luck, Unladen Swallow might find its way onto our devices.. then perhaps we can get Python onto Android. Personally, i would give my right leg for Python on android. (And by that, i mean Python working as well as, or better, than Java. Not that python scripting project, heh.)
