The following may help some Linux folks. I'm using Eclipse and initially unpacked my SDK into /opt/android-sdk-linux_86. I had needed to become root to do this, so when I tried to create an AVD, Eclipse was unable to create a temp directory since I hadn't started Eclipse as root. I moved the SDK to my home directory and things improved.
