I've solved the behavioral problem by wrapping the LinearLayout in a
ScrollView, and the docs for ScrollView say that's what it's for.
I'm surprised, then, that something (android? LinearLayout?) is
*sometimes* constructing a ScrollView implicitly.
Great Job!
