I can confirm that the problem can come from an old version of Java JRE. Apparently it requires JRE 1.6. On Linux Ubuntu 0804 with an OpenJava 1.5 (equivalent of Sun JRE 1.5), I had to upgrade to OpenJava 1.6 (Sun JRE 1.6). Then the problem disappeared.
