In general, at least with modern versions of Android, you shouldn't run into any issues with any fairly modern linux distribution. And with each release, we've been using fewer and fewer tools from your host distribution to help with this. Please report any problems you run into.
Our build farm is still standardized on Ubuntu 14.04 because it still needs to build some older versions of Android, which is why that text around "tested internally" is still there.
