This is what I did: I'm logging any server activity and additionally tcpdump'ing the important ports. The logs are duplicated and a cron task (invoked every 5 minutes) mails a diff of the current files and the duplicates to me and eventually replaces the duplicates with the current logs. This way I don't need any additional functionality in the server besides logging and have instant updates when someone accesses the ports in question.
