Well, not everybody is as cool as we are. Just submitting an entry is
a big acomplishment for many. I'm sure there were 1000's of developers
that wish they could compete but they just don't have the stamina nor
endurance to commit every free time they have to a project outside of
work. We may take it for granted we can do this because I'm sure that
it comes naturally to many of us but believe me, most people cannot do
this. Also, many simply don't believe they are good enough to enter a
contest like this. Not because they do not know how to develope
applications, but rather because they don't think that their ideas can
win. I may have a very slim chance of winning, but I will not lose
hope until the last moment.

 I personally believe it was overwhelming since my initial estimates
were around 150 entries only.
