Indeed it is. It could be used for geo-caching very easily. Actually
it is quite virtual because it is also aimed at small hunts, for
instance for a town to promote its points of interest, and offer a
password at the end, which gives some advantages in partner's shops
(so it´s not practical to have real rewards for everyone playing it).
It is also convenient to have some virtual nodes, but indeed, if the
game really ask to travel far away, that will be a lot better to give
somethink real (it might be quite frustrating to travel hundred of
kilometers to find something you could find at home :) ). But it is
very flexible, as it is just nodes (the chests) and text (or web-page,
so a treasure map can also be given).
It is both a game, and a tool to create the games. The treasure after
the lock might be the precise description of where the real treasure
is (as it is quite tolerant on the map).
Well I need to work again on the database schema, so I will have to
think about it again anyway.
I will be happy to work with you or your colleague, don't hesitate to
contact me. I want to keep it quite simple (to use, but also with only
what is needed, I like the KISS principle. But the security is a
problem). I have seen you have an interest in doing games, so we have
something in common :)
