I'd hesitate to call say that they are using malware techniques. Creating a replacement lock screen requires a lot of hair pulling and playing around. There's no API for switching lock screens you have to put stuff together that in ways that were probably never intended. All of the ones in the market have their own quirks on different devices and Android versions.
