Miss MB does have a valid point.
My N1 gives me an option to choose between skyfire, opera, and the
native browser when opening up html links with an option to set one of
them as default.
There is no reason why the user should not be presented with such an
option for the dialer app.
After all it aligns with Android's design philosophy of all apps being
created equal. Dialer is no different from any other built in app like
browser.  What the original poster meant was if there is a
programmatic way to present this option to the user.
