Not as you described, but I just recently updated my app and had the old version on my phone for testing. The market on my phone said there was an update available for it (though of course I couldn't download it, as you can't download your own paid app). So I would assume the the same idea would apply and users would get update notification. I would make sure to give your beta users a copy that's signed with the same key as what you'll distribute on the market.
