Thanks.... that was helpful.... and I'm assuming if it worked as you described, it would also work for my situation. At least there is some hope :). I do have some procedures in the app to check it's own version against the latest version on my website, but I was hoping that I didn't have to totally rely on them for the BETA.

Yes, the big black box that is the market is certainly one of the challenges of programming for Android :). Hah...considering our last conversations, I'm surprised at your restraint in only calling the market "finicky" :).

Not as you described, but I just recently updated my app and had the old version on my phone for testing. The market on my phone said there was an update available for it (though of course I couldn't download it, as you can't download your own paid app).

So I would assume the the same idea would apply and users would get update notification. I would make sure to give your beta users a copy that's signed with the same key as what you'll distribute on the market. I don't know if that make a difference, but with the finicky Android Market, who knows.
