Common uses: write less code, bind to private variables and methods in
the scope of an instance of the container class (similar to closures),
encapsulate internal helper classes.

I know DanH sounded a bit harsh, but to tell the truth, development with the
Android SDK requires a bit beyond *intermediate* Java programming skills. I
would recommend two years of OO experience (not necessarily in Java.) I
don't think iPhone development is easier, but not everyone one would agree.
