Not sure what "invoked by default" is.

It sure seems like at the time your code runs, DNS is not properly set up yet.

No, a jar file doesn't have its own manifest.
Check the manifest of the application where the jar is used.
Any other clues? Do I have to dig into the implementation of ping and
getbyname:-(  as a last resort?
I don't think that's necessary :)
