I have a ruler with inch marks (a rarity here in Russia, we use the metric system) and did measure the screen, just out of curiosity. It's very close to real 4".
It should have occurred to me to use the aspect ratio to allocate the four inches between vertical and horizontal. Fail again. Thanks, Kostya, I hate getting things wrong and always appreciate quick corrections.

Yes, you were spot on about that. Actually, the screen is a (if not "the most") distinctive feature of the Galaxy S.
