But if it's launch-able from the Market, you can display an Activity that explains this from there. If the user can't find it in the launcher, that's probably where they'd check next, if for no other reason than to leave you a stupid comment. At that point, the can see the "Open" option from the Market. Honestly though, you're already heading down a user-experience nightmare path with this concept of add-on - seems like a simple concept but a lot of users simply won't get it. The ones that do will probably understand why it's missing.
