Which contact provider? Different phones/devices have different implementations. Some might use the same content provider as the Contacts, others might be using a different one. You cannot be sure that there will be a unified system which all the OEMs have to abide by as far as saving the Facebook contacts is concerned.
My best bet would be to do what you have already done.
