Kindle is allowed to "circumvent the Market" because Amazon is selling "digital content or goods that may be consumed outside of the application itself". This is not the same as unlocking a feature (e.g. the removal of ads) in ones app.
See "*Paid and Free Applications" *in* * http://www.android.com/us/developer-content-policy.html There are many apps on the Market that are free but unlock additional features through additional APK downloads from the Market. I don't know the best practice for an IPC unlock mechanism, but it wouldn't be hard to do, and that would seem to comply with Google's requirement of using the Market's Payment Processor. The imminent in-app payment system will no doubt be prettier.
