Thank you for responses. One user reported the problem like this - sounds like he has to launch it via the Market every time!

As far as I know those with the problem all use standard ROMs but I haven't asked about alternative launchers/home screens. With so few users affected it's difficult to find out more. It definitely works on a Desire as I use one myself and we have another one in the office for testing.
