It was provided after a lot? of feedback from devs requesting such a
feature

Its optional, you decide if you want to use it as with most api's. Its
provided to assist you with licensing if you decide to use it, so you
don't have to spend time rolling your own. It doesn't prevent piracy -
nothing can - but it can help make it a bit more difficult. It does
work apparently, but you are advised not to just copy and paste the
example provided. Perhaps a bit more research in this forum will help
you from wasting your time.
