You can't upload a new apk with a lower version number than the current one on the market. You can try it for yourself. Nothing bad will happen, you'll just get an error stating what i've just mentionned.
Don't be to worried about frustrating people. You can simply add a quick note at the top of your description and in the recent changes : "********* The new update is preparing the ground for the awsome new feature coming this month. So stay tuned********" And there you go. Simply email this line to the few that will email you and you're done. Good luck.
