first, tell the manifest that you want to handle rotation yourself
<activity android:name=".MainScreen" android:label="@string/app_name"
android:configChanges="orientation"
android:launchMode="singleTask"
android:alwaysRetainTaskState="true">...
then handle the rotation yourself (or ignore it)

public void onConfigurationChanged(Configuration newConfig)
