Right, the only way to do this is to install custom firmware. Changing the firmware is hard, and not worth it for you I suppose, so this might as well be impossible. (Basically: if you want to modify the firmware, you can, but it will take you a few months ramp up time, if you're a good systems programmer, and even once you change it, nobody is going to be using your firmware anyway, so you've wasted your time.)
