As I said, nowhere does it say that -xlarge is "not recommended" for
3.2 and higher.

"Deprecated" means "we think we have a better solution that you should
investigate, even though you may not be able to use it yet due to
backwards compatibility".

You have no choice but to use -large, -xlarge instead of, or in
addition to, the screen-width resource set qualifiers, if you wish to
support devices earlier than 3.2. Bear in mind that there are millions
of tablets running pre-3.2, probably more than are running 3.2+ at
this juncture, courtesy of the Kindle Fire and NOOK series.
