As I said, nowhere does it say that -xlarge is "not recommended" for 3.2 and higher. "Deprecated" means "we think we have a better solution that you should investigate, even though you may not be able to use it yet due to backwards compatibility". You have no choice but to use -large, -xlarge instead of, or in addition to, the screen-width resource set qualifiers, if you wish to support devices earlier than 3.2.
