I think the purpose of those classes is to let you create your own userspace vpn client type. It basically lets you use tun/tap interfaces to intercept all network traffic, wrap it in your vpn proto of choice and send it to your vpn endpoint. It does this while making it clear to the user what's happening and giving them control to end the session.
