Regarding the umlauts:

1) Replace this:

// Convert the buffer into a string.
            String text = new String(buffer);

with this:

// Convert the buffer into a string.
            String text = new String(buffer, "UTF-8");

... you will now need to catch UnsupportedEncodingException, as a formality.

2) Check the encoding of your asset text file in Eclipse: right click,
properties, see bottom of the right pane.
