Yes, specifically I was referencing those discussions, and was hoping that this move might help motivate Google to update the API. Though it does seem that the iOS MapKit API changes are not so dramatic, looking at the new MapKit implementation on the iOS 6 simulator; the tiles even seem not on par with what they used to be. False alarm I guess.
So likely the fact that not much was added for iOS certainly won't be motivation to Google. But it would be nice to get some offline caching capability or any other advancement, just so people could perhaps say "the Maps apps on Android are so much better," since certainly Google could provide that as a competitive advantage by enabling developers to do more exciting things with maps.
